|Phonics & Early Reading|
Corrective Reading Institute provides inexpensive downloadable phonics materials. It uses the 73 phoneme approach drilled through their phoneme charts and phrase cards and also supplies syllabication charts and the Dolch list of most frequently used words in level specific spelling charts. (We would quibble over the use of the phrase cards ...we prefer the ladder method of blending early words reinforced with controlled readers and then general early reading materials for first-time readers.) Helpful placement tests are included online for free. Placement tests and instructions for remedial students are provided as well so that a student can begin at the level he or she needs. Instructions supplied for discerning hearing disabled and dyslexic students too. You can also purchase the materials with teacher instructions in a bound copy. No reading materials are supplied, so this is not as full a phonics program as others on the market, but it is a very inexpensive way to gather the phoneme tools and appears to have solid coverage of phonics and early spelling. Developed by a certified reading instructor who has worked many years with remedial students.
Go Phonics. This program is highly recommended by Basic Skills. It reminds us of the wonderful Horizon/Little Patriot readers with an added Sing, Spell, Read, Write approach and some Phonics Pathways type dyslexia helps. We gleaned this off of Basic Skills website and have not seen it anywhere else nor used it, but we've included it here as we know finding controlled phonics readers linked to an incremental phonics instruction program are difficult to find. This is a complete program (with a rather impressive price tag if you buy everything), but you can purchase individual components separately in particular the controlled vocabulary readers that caught our eye.
